How To Pinpoint Your Personal Style

I hope I’m not alone in this, but one question I really hate answering is “How would you describe your personal style?”
If you’re anything like me you’ll string together an explanation that doesn’t really make sense but it sort of answers the question, and then you’ll change the subject completely.

In the past I’ve made my fair share of purchases I regret (who let me buy a fringed blue crop top?) and I think the reason why I’ve made some of these purchasing blunders all boils down to not fully understanding my own personal style, not knowing which clothes feel like ‘me’ and which feel like imposters in my wardrobe.

Like the Type A person I am, I’ve come up with a list of questions to help myself and anyone else out there that’s looking to pinpoint their style and figure out the kind of image they want to project:

Ask yourself-

What colours or shades do you gravitate towards?
Do you love patterned clothing or prefer more minimal designs?

Are there any parts of your figure that you like to play up with clothes?
Are there any parts of your figure that you like to hide with clothes?
How do you generally like your clothes to fit?Β
What kind of outfits makes you feel the most ‘you’?
How do you add that extra oomph to your look? Through accessories? Or maybe through hair and makeup etc?

What are your most worn and well-loved clothing items?
What kinds of clothes make you feel the most uncomfortable?

For me, I’ve figured out that my personal style consists of a lot of neutrals and fairly minimal yet classic looks. I feel the most comfortable in breezy/oversized tops and more slim fit bottoms and seeing as I don’t gravitate toward jewellery, I use bags, shoes and my hair and makeup to add a little something extra to my looks. My style is simple, but always quite put together (I hope). Bam, there’s me in four sentences.

How would you define your personal style?

  1. Now why can't people ask questions like yours rather than the generic 'What's your personal style'. I actually can't wait to sit down and work through these questions to help me figure out the things i want to add to my wardrobe this season. I'm in the middle of a Marie Kondo-esque declutter so this will be perfect xx Lauren

    • Tell me about it! Those generic style questions are the worst.

It makes me really happy to hear you found these questions helpful Lauren, good luck with your decluttering!

  2. these are great questions to ask about personal style, they even help when going through my closet and I question what to keep or toss, great post!

I can relate to this so much! I've always had a hard time pin pointing what my style is, but as I've grown older, and the more I've experimented I think I've come quite close to finding it! I think it takes a lot of trying new things and a growing confidence to find your sense of style! Great post love πŸ™‚

    • I couldn't agree more Diana, it's taken me a long time (and a lot of awful outfits in the past) to figure out my style but finally I feel like I've nailed it down.

Very interesting this post. It's great to take a minute to sit down and generally think about those questions!

I'm not really sure what my personal style is so I'm going to print out these questions to help me sort through my wardrobe! I needed this list so thanks ever so much, I can see it's going to be really helpful for me πŸ™‚

This is a lovely post. My clothes are mostly girly clothes, I love everything floral and I love dresses. Before dresses, I used to do jeans, a white tshirt and a statement necklace to add some glamour to my outfit, but the last couple of years I wear mostly dresses and skirts! πŸ™‚

  10. Lovely post, and great questions to ask yourself! It's great to know your go-to pieces, what clothing pieces you always turn to! Xx

  11. I've actually been thinking about my personal style a lot. It has changed over the years and I don't really know what my style is exactly, but these questions helped a lot to figure it out! πŸ™‚

Hah, I am terrible at describing it but lately it's definitely ~lazy chic~ on the weekends, all about jeans and knee-high boots or easy and comfy clothes!

i feel like when your described your personal style – you totally described mine! i have a lot of black from when i used to be a hairstylist. the neutral look stuck with me, and i love classic shapes and structured pieces. xo!

    • You're right, it does sound like we have a similar sense of style! I love structured pieces and classic shapes as well, I just feel the most comfortable wearing pieces like that as well.

  15. I think it definitely takes a few years and some trial and error to work out your style and get better at picking out the things you'll actually end up wearing and loving for years to come. I personally experimented a lot with buying secondhand clothes which I think is a great way to find unique things and even if half of it doesn't work out you haven't wasted too much money, and you can just donate it again for someone else to try out. πŸ™‚

    Jessica –

    • Trial and error is a good way to describe some of my past fashion failures, it really does take a while to figure things out doesn't it?

I think experimenting with secondhand clothes is a great idea, I used to do that a lot a couple of years back and I had so much fun chopping and changing things to suit my style at the time πŸ™‚

These are great questions! After answering them I came up with: My style consists of pinks and blues, mainly fitted items with some frilly details, and I use bags and shoes for emphasis. This is a great post!

  17. Gabrielle says:

A great way of determining your personal style for sure! I tend to describe my 'personal style' as classic and romantic, though asking myself your question of what I wear most frequently… there's a hell of a lot of skinny jeans mixed up in there haha! Have a lovely weekend πŸ™‚

  21. LOVED this post! I think we have quite similar style, I like my clothes to be fairly neutral and minimal, simple shapes, not too many prints. I'm all about skinny jeans, stripey tops, lots of black and white and denim. And a great handbag can really make an outfit! I have to say I've found it a lot easier to see what suits me since starting a blog/YouTube channel!
    Brigitte x |

    • I agree, a great handbag can definitely make an outfit! I don't have a Youtube channel but I know for me blogging makes it a lot easier to see what suits me as well. Sometimes after taking outfit photos I'll be uploading and editing thinking "Nope, I really can't pull that look off." haha

This post is awesome, love the questions – super helpful for defining your own personal style which can definitely be hard! My style is pretty ecletic, I love dressing in big black boots and more grungy clothes sometimes but I also like pastels and rainbows haha xx

These questions are so great! I've kind of recently realised exactly what my style is, but these questions definitely confirmed it. I love neutral and nude shades – both cool and warm tones. I like clothes to fit near enough perfectly, then I like to accentuate the look through my coat or shoes. I also love my make-up to compliment my outfit. I'll probably create an eye look that compliments the most obvious shade in my outfit.:D – My Full Coverage Foundation Routine

I never really do much with accessories for some reason, other than my winter beanies which I love. I should experiment more though, I wear the same earrings and watch all the time. I do enjoy fashion but I don't dress myself as well as I could.

  27. I haven't actually figured out my personal style. I've been experimenting and I believe that the time will come for me to be more comfortable with my style. As of now, I actually like experimenting clothes.

  28. Love this post! Your questions are so great because it actually makes me think about my own style! I gravitate towards monochromatic colours but this winter, I've bought a few colourful jumpers and things which I'm keen to give them a go! x

I think I'm definitely a minimal person when it comes to my personal style – something I've only recently discovered!

  31. Love this post! I love wearing black and neutral colors most of the time, but I also love bright blouses or wearing hot pink shoes once in a while for a pop of color. I think I have my husband to blame for that because he always said all I wear is black and eventually started buying me bright accessories haha πŸ™‚ But hey, you won't find me saying no to him buying me shoes, even if they're hot pink haha πŸ˜€

  33. Gorgeous photo!! I definitely purchased my fair share of "imposters" when I couldn't figure out my personal style, and still on occasion do because I want to switch things up (I never do lol). I'd definitely say I feel more comfortable in neutrals… mostly black ;). I'd say I have a simple aesthetic as well and like to add pops through my makeup. These questions definitely make figuring out your personal style a lot easier!

  36. I can never describe my style and it can be quit frustrating but like you, as of recently my style consists of neutrals and very minimal looks! I would love to adapt the minimalism look completely!

I loved this post – made me think a lot about what kind of style I'd like to portay in future!

    Margarita Chi | MARGARITACHI.CO

    • Yep we must me long lost twins (with completely different hair colours!) because I feel the same way.

Sometimes I have waves where I feel bored with my clothes but the majority of the time I feel really comfortable and quite sleek, everything goes together well because I wear minimal pieces and neutral colours πŸ™‚

Love, love, love this post – I love seeing what people use to create their own personal style, with me it's a mix of things however I love my boots in the winter along with darker colours but in the summer, it's completely different as I love to style things in different ways and add so much colour to my looks!

Nail polish plays a major part in outfits too! πŸ™‚

  56. FIONNAC says:

those questions are better alternatives than the typical how do you describe your style. i usually don't raelly know what to say because i love a lot of things, even though i can be more minimal. love the post though!

  57. Nice post! It's not an easy question to answer, especially if you like to experiment, or change your look regularly. I like your minimalist style! I used to wear tons of color, then I went through a phase where I wore a lot of spikes and lace, mixing soft and hard together. Now, I've gone pretty classic and romantic, but one thing I know for sure is that I wear what makes me feel confident and happy!

    • I think that's always what people strive for with their style anyway, I know for me the goal is always to feel confident and happy in what I'm wearing as well. The worst thing is when you wear an outfit and it makes you feel the opposite of those things!

  58. Adaleta says:

These are definitely excellent questions to ask yourself when deciding what kind of style you may have. I appreciate this post because I typically say I have boring style, but I don't even know what that means. I like tees and jeans and that's still a style πŸ™‚ xx

  60. This is a really thorough guide to working out your personal style. I think I've recently gotten to a place where I love everything in my wardrobe. I prefer relaxed silhouettes and neutral shades, and I don't accessorise that much. But shoes… SHOES. Shoes is my thing, and not even heels, haha! x

    • That's great Martha, I think it's such a nice feeling to feel comfortable in the clothes you wear and to feel comfortable with your own style. I really love wearing neutral shades as well and I'm so with you on the shoes! Give me a good pair of shoes any day!
