Cleansing Devices- Worth The Hype?

luna foreo 2 beauty review

I think when it comes to skincare we’re all after the next best thing. Nothing every really seems to be good enough because let’s face it, if we were completely satisfied with our skincare routines then why would we always be on the lookout for new products to try? Well actually, it is pretty fun just in general to try out new products but still, for me personally I always want to find whatever I can that’s going to help my skin to look better than it does now.

Cue the cleansing devices. Clarisonics, Sonic systems, Luna devices, Facial brushes- the hype around these kinds of products has always interested me because I had to wonder whether a product would be better at washing my face than I am…

In comes the *FOREO Luna 2, the first cleansing device I’d ever used that showed me a whole new realm of cleansing. So for everyone out there who’s a little iffy on the whole ‘cleansing devices’ trend, here’s a breakdown to figure out whether or not these would work for you.

FOREO Luna 2 review

What is it?

It’s a palm-sized pulsating facial brush made from silicone that’s used to give your skin a deeper clean than your hands or a muslin cloth are able to.

What does it do?

It removes 99.5% of dirt/oil build up and makeup residue from your face. 99.5% people, that’s pretty impressive in my books. Few things make me cringe as much as the thought of perpetually leaving little makeup and dirt remnants on my face (ew) so this really impressed me.

How do you use it?

Well first off, make sure it’s charged. Luckily the device comes fully charged which was great for me because I am la-zy and one full charge lasts for months (can I get a hell yes?!). So assuming it’s charged, you apply your cleanser, click the centre button once to activate, run it under some water and then in circular motions gently rotate the device around your face to cleanse. A small light flashes at the bottom of the device every 15 seconds to tell you to move it around your face (to prevent over cleansing) but personally I don’t spend exactly 15 seconds on one section of my face, I just do what comes natural. There are also 12 different intensities for the pulsations but I just use the intensity that the Luna device was set to when it arrived because it seems to work well for my skin!

PS, it’s also 100% waterproof (so you can use it in the shower and you don’t have to worry like I did about accidentally electrocuting yourself before I found this out…)

Why should I bother with a cleansing device?

Up straight, I’m a bit of a germaphobe so the thing I love the most about the Luna device is that it’s made of silicone. Silicone resists bacteria build up so hygiene-wise this is pretty foolproof. When I found out that the device resists bacteria build up I was thrilled because personally that’s always been a worry of mine when it came to using cleansing brushes. I don’t want to use a facial cleansing brush that’s going to build up bacteria and break me out in future, that seems so counter productive…

Will this work for me?

I was worried this would irritate my skin so I went for the sensitive (lavender) version of the FOREO Luna 2 device and for me, this is quite gentle on my skin. The only time this has slightly irritated my skin is when I’ve had large active breakouts, so if you deal with regular painful acne breakouts or if you have very sensitive, rash-prone skin then I would be wary. If you don’t have any issues with sensitivity then I’d definitely recommend this. There are also variations of the Luna 2 for skin that’s combination, normal or oily and there’s one for men too. So if you don’t think this would work for you, I’d actually really recommend it as a gift for any men in your life because we all know they’re probably not washing their faces very well…am I right?

facial devices- worth the hype? Are cleansing devices worth the hype?

Yes and No. If you’re happy with your current skincare routine and the state of your skin then buying one of these isn’t going to revolutionise your life anytime soon. Saying that, after doing my research and speaking from experience, because this is made from silicone the Luna 2 is one of the most gentle and hygienic cleansing devices on the market so if you’re looking to really deep clean your skin and you don’t have a lot of issues with sensitivity, definitely try this out.

  1. I'd never heard of this before!!! It's sooo pretty to have on a bathroom counter, especially compared with the other face brushes and I love that the bristles are silicone as they seem much less likely to scratch the skin and cause acne scarring. I have reviewed the Magnitone and Clarisonic face brushes – would love to try this to compare! Thanks for sharing! Jade πŸ™‚

    • Definitely, when I was researching I found out that the bristles on other cleansing brushes can actually damage your skin! But the silicone on this can't which made me so happy πŸ™‚

I've seen this in a few other posts and in store too but I've never really though much of it. I was interested in a Clarisonic a while ago but somehow lost interest (crazy right!?). I'd like to try using one though as I'm currently just using my hands and towel the good old fashion way.

I was considering getting Clarisonic but the longer I was thinking about the less favourable reviews were. I think for what it is, the price is too high. Iga x

Thanks for the review! I hear every one talking about these, and I didn't know if I should try it out, but as I'm pretty happy with the state of my skin and my routine, I think I'm just going to stick to it right now… Maybe I'll try someday, just not now πŸ˜‰ Because it's quite expensive as well!

    • That sounds great lucie, cleansing devices are definitely an investment but at least if you go for the Foreo Luna device you never have to pay for replacement brush heads like with the clarisonic!

  5. My cosmetologist told me to go for old school scrubs as apparently they are much more effective and better, however I am still for some reason want to try these cleansing devices! xx

I've heard a lot about the FOREO recently & wondered whether it's worth a shot as people seem to be raving about it. I'd have to read more reviews before I splurged on it as I'm a bit sceptical as to whether it'd work for my own sensitive skin.

  8. I didn't even know that this was a thing! I'm so glad you posted this because it sounds like something I definitely need in my life. It seems to be perfect for someone like myself who is also lazy but needs to do a bit of a change up! (:

I've heard about this for long and have been meaning to buy it for over a year! It seems like since its silicone it'd be a lot more higenic and easier to clean that brush headed products!

seems like an interesting device, love the design! i stopped using them as i have really sensitive skin, and it tends to dry out my face, but i heard that it works well with normal skin.

  21. Cleansing devices are verryy much worth it! I recently purchased Vanity Planet and my skin hasn't been looked this amazing since I was like 12! My skin feels softer and I actually feel like my face is cleaner when I use the cleanser device. πŸ™‚ xx

  22. I have this and I like it but I don't use it all the time…However, this has reminded me that I need to charge mine, as I went to use it the other day and it had ran out of charge. I definitely need to start using it more though.

    • It's still expensive in Aus too, I think if you're interested in these kinds of things, if it's in your current budget and if you don't have skin that's too sensitive then go for it! πŸ™‚

I agree, it's so fun to test out different skincare products – basically just another excuse for me to purchase new things though haha! Cleansing devices are something that I've been curious about too. But I’ve always been scared that they'll give me more blemishes. So I'm really glad that you've explained this device in so much detail. It actually sounds amazing, as any make-up left on my skin makes me cringe too haha!! I'd really love to try one now, I didn’t realise there were so many settings to cater for each individual skin type either. Also I love that it’s super hygienic – that’s a must for me, I’m an absolute clean freak!xx – Beauty Bay Unboxing/Haul | The Ordinary by Deciem

I got the tiny version of this in my LookFantastic Advent Calendar and I absolutely love it! I have to admit that sometimes IΒ΄m a bit too lazy to use it or feel like it does nothing special but my skin speaks otherwise. It really draws out my spots and leaves my skin feeling cleaner than ever! Once my little one dies I might upgrade to this bigger version because I love the fact that it blinks every 15 seconds (I get very insecure about how long to use this).

I bought the Luna Play which is the travel version of Luna's cleansing line. It only lasts for roughly 100 uses but I bought it because it was a much cheaper version and I wanted to try the brand out before spending more on one of their main products. The Luna Play just ran out and I am now deliberating on whether I want to go ahead and buy the full version so this post has been really useful in making a decision <3

    • I'm so glad you found this helpful Lucy! I love knowing that there's a travel version of this as well, that's a really clever way of trying it out without investing in the full size.

I've never heard of the brand before but I'm definitely keen to try it out. I love the colour too!

  35. Agreed with the yes and the no – are they worth it.
I am happy with my current routine.
I am a germaphobe too – I actually use medical gauze that I buy on ebay in bulk.
This was suggested by a dermatologist instead of spending money on a device.
I wrote a whole post on it.
