Damn packaging gets me every time. I think that’s why I tend to gravitate toward higher-end products, because so often their packaging is just beautiful. Still, quality is quality and if I can find a product I love at the drugstore (as you U.S. people love to call it) at a fraction of the price of something high-end, then you better believe I’m going to stick with that product. Plus, if you feel like buying new products (me all the time) but you also don’t really want to spend much money (also me all the time), then finding drugstore gems is the way to go. You get the good products and the little thrill of trying something new, but you don’t have to check your bank account
and cry like I did last week after my impromptu shopping trip to Sephora lol oops.
I’ve been using this for years because I am stupidly picky when it comes to moisturisers. Ironically, I hate it when moisturisers feel too…moisturising? I like the feeling of a fresh face so anything heavy, oily or too rich puts me off. When it comes to finding a moisturiser to wear underneath my makeup, I feel like I’m even pickier because it has to actually work underneath my foundation and not make it slide right off throughout the day. Even worse are the moisturisers that mix with your foundation and oxidise it, but this one doesn’t do that at all. If you have normal, combination or oily skin I think you’d love this because it absorbs quite quickly, it has some SPF for during the day and it doesn’t leave any kind of oily film or residue on your skin.
I got this as part of a Christmas advent calendar (makeup advent calendars are actually such a good idea) and honestly, this reminds me a lot of the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette. It’s got those same cool, slightly smoky tones. With a good primer, the quality of these shades and the blendability is pretty impressive as well, especially for the price.
I find these cool tones look especially beautiful in winter because I tend to wear a lot of greys and cool tones in my outfits so the shades really compliment one another. As a stand-alone palette, this needs more matte shades. So while I wouldn’t necessarily take this while travelling, when I pair this palette with one or two matte shades from my collection, it’s beautiful. Definitely not complaining about this addition to my makeup stash.
Oh the amount of mascara smudges that I had to try and wipe off of this tube of mascara before I took these photos to make it look semi-presentable.
Whether drugstore or high end, a problem I find with most mascaras is that they look good when I first apply them but throughout the day they either smudge or subtly keep transferring to my lid. It’s uh…not my cutest look. This is my favourite drugstore mascara because of the formula. It gives you lengthened but still natural looking lashes and it doesn’t clump, even if you go to layer it up. I find I can layer this over other brand mascaras and it doesn’t cake up or give me spider lashes, and that’s not a trait I can say about most of the mascaras I’ve tried.
What are your favourite drugstore products?
